- HRF × ORIGIN X

About the session
For some, freedom is a given. For others, it's a choice made at the risk of their lives.
We'll screen Beyond Utopia, a documentary that follows North Korean defectors as they escape, and then sit down with Hyeonseo Lee, who made that journey herself.
What does it mean to win your freedom? How does life change once you have it? And what does the right to choose — something most of us take for granted — mean in a single life? Let's think it through together.
- After the screening and conversation, Hyeonseo will sign copies of the Korean edition of her memoir.
- Co-hosted by HRF × ORIGIN X.
Hyeonseo Lee
Author · North Korean human rights advocate · TED speaker
Hyeonseo Lee is a North Korean-born author and human rights advocate who speaks around the world.
She escaped North Korea in 1997, lived in China under hidden identities for about ten years, and resettled in South Korea in 2008.
Her 2013 TED talk, “My Escape from North Korea,” resonated worldwide and has been viewed more than 27 million times on TED.com.
Her memoir, The Girl with Seven Names, became an international bestseller. She has since spoken at the United Nations and other international forums on the human rights and freedom of North Koreans, and has taken part in Human Rights Foundation events.
Beyond Utopia
Beyond Utopia follows people fleeing North Korea in search of freedom — real escapes, filmed as they happened.
With footage captured along the route, it traces families on a perilous journey through China. As they cross borders and move in hiding, the film asks what freedom and the right to choose truly mean in a single human life.
It won the Audience Award at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and moves the conversation on North Korean human rights beyond politics, toward individual lives and choices.
